This beautiful blend is our homage to the great American grape Norton, one of the oldest varieties native to North America and specifically the state grape of Virginia. We utilize Chambourcin is this blend to rein in the overwhelming personality of the Norton grape by emphasizing balance and finesse in the overall structure of this wine. There is a powerful nose on this wine showcasing the rustic qualities of the Norton grape and the elegant nature of Chambourcin. Notes of dark berry fruit lead followed by hints of leather, earthiness (think: fresh tilled soil), black currant, and a touch of violet floral notes. The firm tannins found in Norton and balanced by the delicate tannins found in Chambourcin. Overall, the wine has a complex powerful nose that is perfectly balanced on the palate with a long, supple finish.
70% Chambourcin grape and 30% Norton
This wine is a blend of Chambourcin 70% and Norton 30 %. After destemming, the grapes were fermented in bins with commercial yeast for 10-14 days and then pressed to barrel. The malolactic fermentation happened in barrels, where the wine was primarily aged for 6 months in neutral oak. However, the Norton did receive 3 months of new Virginia oak.
